Now What Do I Do?

We’re so excited about the decision you’ve made to follow Jesus Christ! You’re next steps are important. As you start out on this new journey with Christ, you will begin to discover who God is and how to follow Him in your daily life. It’s not about jumping through hoops, or doing enough good things to make God happy with you or win His affection. It’s about connecting with God in such a real and sensible way that actually changes our lives on a daily basis.

There are several vital avenues for your spiritual growth:

Read God’s Word (the Bible) daily

This is how God speaks to you. This historically accurate collection of sixty-six books is God’s inspired words given directly to you to guide you through life, to equip you for everything God has planned for you, and ultimately bring you closer to Him. To get a rolling start, we suggest that you start reading a chapter from the Gospel of John and Proverbs each day. After you get into the habit of reading your bible daily, read though the entire New Testament while also reading one Proverb every day. Here’s a link to a great Mon-Fri daily READING PLAN.

Another great resource to consider is the ONE YEAR BIBLE ONLINE. With this practical resource you can take advantage of listening to daily audio readings and commentary, plus other great resources to help you grow further.  Make this a daily discipline and watch where it will take you. As you learn more about Him and obey His Word, you will become more like Him. If you don’t have a Bible let us know. We’d be happy to give you one.

Pray daily

We pray because prayer changes things, it changes us, and it brings us closer to God. Prayer is simply communicating with God. As you pray to your Heavenly Father, you can praise Him for who He is, thank Him for what He has done, ask Him for the forgiveness of your sins, and lay your requests before Him. God loves you and wants to communicate with you daily!

Attend a Bible-believing church

This will help you grow in your new life in Christ, as you learn from the teaching of God’s Word with other believers. You will also experience fellowship and encouragement as you engage with other Christ-followers in your community.

Serving

Once you’re in a local church, you need to serve in that church and in your community. Jesus was the greatest servant ever. He came to serve and not to be served, and thus we should be serving as well. Serving will have an incredible impact on your relationship with others and it will have a profound impact on your ever-growing relationship with God.

Giving

God does amazing things through our generosity. Once you start giving of your finances, you’ll see the difference it makes in your life and your pocketbook. Start by choosing a percentage that you’re comfortable with, maybe 10%,  and be consistent and open to God calling you to higher levels of giving down the road. Did you know, this is the only command God gives in the entire Bible that He follows up with, “Test Me.” It’s as if He is saying, “Test Me to see if I won’t bless you like crazy. Watch how I’ll change things about your life.”

Share your faith

Once you have begun to experience Christ at work in your life, you will want to share His love and forgiveness with others. In Matthew 5, Jesus calls His followers to be “lights” to the world. We are to shine brightly for God, making His name known and glorified in all the earth.

Committing your life to Jesus is a big step, full of newness, excitement, hope and questions. Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean that you suddenly understand everything needed for your new life with Christ.
