After leaving Galilee, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and begins to openly challenge the hearts of the religious leaders. After healing a man on the Sabbath, the religious leaders wanted to destroy Jesus. They weren’t interested in a miracle, but offended by the breaking of “their” law. The Sabbath was how the religious leaders controlled the masses—using it to further their agenda and place of prominence. Jesus healed on the Sabbath in order to reveal the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and this was the beginning of the confrontation that ultimately led to Jesus’ death.
